The Gift That Keeps On Giving - Benefits of Placenta Consumption

Your placenta is a temporary organ that forms in the uterus during early pregnancy and is connected to your growing baby. It gradually grows throughout your pregnancy and has many important responsibilities. Providing oxygen and nutrients to the baby, as well removing waste away from your baby are just two of those very important functions.

Once you have given birth and your baby is detached from the placenta, it's job is done... or is it? Shortly after the birth of your baby, comes the birth of the placenta. Some people view their placenta as waste and discard it. Others have cultural or personal preferences and choose to bury or consume their placenta by having it placed in smoothies or encapsulated.

Some of the benefits of taking placenta capsules -

- Lessens the risk of baby blues and postpartum depression

- Increases energy level

- Helps stabilize hormones

- Increases postnatal iron levels

- Speeds up recovery time

- Encourages milk production

The effects of placenta consumption varies from person but for many the benefits outweigh any risk.

That's it!

Now here's what to expect next -

- You will receive a text between 35-37 weeks. This will have reminders of what to expect when it's time to give birth. This will also give you the opportunity to save Jen's number and ask any questions you may have.

- Ensure that your midwife/OB and/or your birthing team is aware that you plan to keep your placenta.

- Once you are in labor send a "heads up" text to Jen letting her know you are in labor or being induced.

- Once your placenta has been delivered, it should be placed in a sealed container or ziplock bag and placed on ice or refrigerated as soon as possible. It is best practice to bring your own gallon sized ziplock bag and small cooler if delivering at a hospital. Placenta will be transferred into Jen's cooler during pick up.

- Let us know when your placenta is ready to be picked up. Placentas are typically picked up within 3 hours of the time Jen is contacted - between 9:30am - 7pm. Pick up can happen at later times depending on where you deliver at.

- Once received and ready for process, placentas are prepped, steamed, dehydrated, finely grounded and finally, encapsulated.

- Turn around time is between 2-3 days from the time your placenta is picked up, often times sooner. Completed placenta capsules will be dropped off at an agreed location (the hospital or your home).

- If you are pleased with your experience -  a google review is always very much appreciated!
